Frequently asked questions

Is BalanceForge really free?
Yes — no subscription, no trial period, no hidden fees. The free balance sheet generator works entirely in your browser at no cost, forever.
Do I need to create an account or sign up?
No account required. Open the app and start building your balance sheet immediately. Your work is saved automatically in your browser's local storage.
Is this GAAP or IFRS compliant?
BalanceForge supports both GAAP and IFRS presentation standards. Select your preferred standard in the editor — the sheet structure and terminology adjusts accordingly.
How do I export my balance sheet to PDF?
Click "Download PDF" in the editor toolbar. A professionally formatted PDF balance sheet is generated entirely in your browser and downloaded in seconds — no server involved.
Is my financial data secure?
All data is stored only in your browser's local storage — nothing is transmitted to any server at any point. You can also export your sheet as a .bf.json file to back it up locally.
Can I compare two periods side by side?
Yes. Import a prior period's .bf.json file using the "Compare" button and the editor shows prior-period amounts alongside current figures, with change indicators. Ideal for period-over-period analysis.
What is a balance sheet?
A balance sheet is a financial statement that reports a company's assets, liabilities, and equity at a specific point in time. It must always balance: total assets must equal total liabilities plus total equity.
What is IFRS 18 and when does it take effect?
IFRS 18 "Presentation and Disclosure in Financial Statements" replaces IAS 1 and is effective for annual periods beginning on or after 1 January 2027. It clarifies minimum line items on the balance sheet, introduces new subtotal requirements, and improves comparability of financial statements across entities. BalanceForge includes a pre-built IFRS 18 template — click "Load template" in the editor to get started.
How is IFRS 18 different from IAS 1 on the balance sheet?
The balance sheet structure under IFRS 18 retains the current/non-current split from IAS 1 but adds clearer minimum line item requirements. Notably, right-of-use assets (IFRS 16) and lease liabilities must be presented as separate line items, and entities are expected to present additional subtotals where relevant. BalanceForge's IFRS 18 template includes these as named line items.
Can I use BalanceForge to prepare for IFRS 18 adoption?
Yes. The built-in IFRS 18 template pre-fills standard section headers and line items aligned with the new standard. Enter your figures, validate the balance in real time, and export a PDF to share with your auditor or board. The template is labelled "IFRS 18 (effective 2027)" and does not constitute a certified compliance review.
Can I import my trial balance from QuickBooks, Xero, or Excel?
Yes. Use "Import CSV/Excel" in the editor toolbar to upload a trial balance exported from any accounting system. BalanceForge auto-detects column headers for QuickBooks, Xero, and Wave, and lets you manually map columns for any other format. Revenue and expense rows are skipped automatically — only balance sheet accounts are imported.
